Wisconsin ATV Trip: 5 Cabins on Northwoods Trails
There are few activities that match the incredible beauty and adrenaline-inducing thrills of riding an ATV in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Unfortunately, a lot of Northern Wisconsin lodging options require an additional drive to and from the ATV trail, which means more time in your car and less out in nature.
If you’re planning an ATV trip to the Northwoods and want to maximize your time outside, then you won’t want to miss these five great cabins with on-site ATV trail access.
This beautiful lodge is located right in the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and offers a variety of cabins sure to accommodate any group. If you’re planning a trip for a large party, be sure to check out their historic “Animal House” cabin which was built before 1900.
Once you’re settled into the lodge, it’s time to hit the ATV trails. We recommend heading north from the lodge into the Valhalla Hills. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, consider taking the Battleaxe ATV trail from Iron River to Port Wing.
Located near the Cathedral Pines State Natural Area, this quiet resort features three different cabins, each with its own Northwoods charm. Don’t forget to check out “My Bar,” the on-site bar and restaurant, after a day out on the trails.
The popular Dusty Trails system is accessible right from your cabin’s doorstep. Featuring a varied, hilly terrain, these trails offer both challenging turns and scenic views. Head north from the cabin for great trails that pass Smoke Lake and Lake Pickerel.
Rosenthal’s Resort – Webb Lake
Rosenthal’s Resort offers guests an authentic Northwoods experience, but with some more modern amenities to make sure your vacation is comfortable. Plus, you won’t have to stick to just ATVing, as these cabins have easy access to kayaking, fishing and golf.
Pick up the ATV Trail #6 from the resort and then head east toward Danbury. You’ll connect to Burnett County's trail system, which runs along some of the area's beautiful lakes. Eventually, you’ll reach the St. Croix River, which is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat. We recommend the Fishbowl Bar and Grill, a legendary local establishment that has frequent specials and excellent chili.
Virgin Timber Resort – Hayward
This unique resort offers simple, rustic cabins with stone fireplaces. Located on the shores of Moose Lake, this area is also beloved by anglers from around the state. Don’t forget to pack your fishing gear!
This resort’s direct access to ATV trail #5 quickly connects you to two popular ATV trail systems in Sawyer County. If you’re looking for a challenge, the Dead Horse Trail offers 56 miles of trail that will take you north into Ashland County. To the south you’ll find the Flambeau River State Forest, which features 40 miles of scenic trails that are perfect for a more relaxed ride.
Gateway Lodge and Resort – Mercer
This beautiful set of cabins was remodeled recently to give them a touch of modern elegance to go along with their Northwoods heritage. Located on the beautiful Turtle Flambeau Flowage, this lodge has cabins for everyone from the couple on a romantic getaway to the big family taking a Wisconsin vacation.
You can pick up the Iron County ATV Trail System right from the Gateway Lodge and Resort. This system is incredibly vast, with more than 200 miles of trail. We recommend checking out Trail 51, which connects to a variety of smaller trails that showcase Iron County’s logging and mining history.
