Exhibit: This Train is Bound for Glory: Racine’s Underground Railroad History
701 Main St - Racine, WI 53403
During the time of the Underground Railroad, Racine’s busy harbor offered fugitive enslaved persons the opportunity to escape to Canada by ship. This exhibit focuses on the stories of fugitives known to have escaped through southeastern Wisconsin. In particular, the exhibit highlights the story of Caroline Quarlls, first known fugitive on Wisconsin’s Underground Railroad, and Joshua Glover and the individuals and locations that played a part in his escape. Glover's story is of particular significance in that it led to a long legal battle and eventual statewide repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act. Also, featured is Wisconsin’s 22nd Infantry and its commander. During the Civil War, it was known as the “Abolitionist Regiment” for assisting fugitives from slavery.
