Roderick Cox, “a trailblazer… a conductor who will be in the vanguard” (Minnesota Star Tribune), leads this showcase of frenzied seduction, serene lyricism, and compelling majesty. Following Strauss’s titillating tone poem, Israeli pianist Inon Barnatan performs Beethoven’s intimate Piano Concerto No. 4. The orchestra concludes with Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5, commissioned in honor of his 50th birthday and featuring his prominent “swan theme” inspired by a chance observation of a passing flock.
