A great lake and a great city. The new asphalt-paved Osaugie Trail is a great way to enjoy both. A pleasant pedal takes you past harbor views and city views. The trail is a wonderful adventure. The city's harbor is the busiest on the Great Lakes. Huge oceangoing ships come through the channel at Wisconsin Point. The trail passes under the immense Burlington Ore Dock. It was here that the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald took on cargo before sailing into the treacherous November gale of 1975 that sent her to the bottom. Just off the trail at Barker's Island you can tour the S.S. Meteor Maritime Museum. The tough-looking freighter was built in Superior in 1896, the last of a fleet of sleek "whalebacks" that once plied the inland seas of the Great Lakes. You can also opt for an on-road side trip that leads to Wisconsin Point, a wonderfully wild sandbar with miles of beaches. At the Tourist Visitor Center is the Richard I. Bong Heritage Center, which honors America's top World War II flying ace. It houses the actual Lockheed P38 Lightning he flew. After taking in the lake and harbor sights, visit Superior's many off-trail attractions that include shopping, museums and antiquing. Land, sea and air. Now that's Superior.
